9 March – 6 June 2010, Hat Works
Museum and Stockport Story Museum
“Treasure from Trash” is
an innovative exhibition organised by Stockport Council and on display
at the Hat Works Museum and the Stockport Story Museum until the 6th
june. The exhibition is a collection of over 1000 contemporary recycled
artefacts sourced from Africa, Asia and the Americas. The vibrancy of
the objects in the displays aim to give pleasure and inspire admiration
and a sense of wonder while encouraging people to reconsider what they
throw away. Aims from the exhibition also include raising awareness of
recycling as a positive response to the challenges of unsustainable
consumption and to recognise the skills of innovative manufacturers in
emerging economies.
Treasure from Trash was originated by knowtrash with the Eden Project.
It is uniquely being shown across two museums. At Hat Works you can see
bags, hats, jewellery and other items used for personal adornment.
Stockport Story displays more practical objects, such as stoves,
lights, kitchen utensils and toys.
Kingfisher Graphics commitment to the environment includes solvent free
printing and encouraging the use of recycled materials. For the
exhibition, Kingfisher used off cut board from other projects as a way
of maximising the use of materials and contributing to lower costs. All
the printed panels will be recycled at the end of the exhibition.
